The Prairie Heraldry Society exists to serve the heraldists of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as to foster the development of correct and legitimate heraldry in the prairie provinces. In order to achieve this, we hold semi-regular meetings which allow our members to discuss the latest developments in the field (grants and innovations, or articles in recent issues of Heraldry in Canada, The Prairie Tressure, and other periodicals), to show off heraldic books and knick-knacks, to learn from and to advise each other, and to enjoy an evening with people who share a common interest. Several of us are working towards obtaining the postnomials "LRHSC" (Liscentiate of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada); learning is always more fun as a group activity than as a solitary one.
Meetings meant for the entire branch are held twice per year. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th, 2003 at 6:00 pm in Edmonton. The meeting will be held at the home of Darren George, at 10439 -87th Ave., (phone 780-433-2140, email: tressure
email.com).
Of course, it would be foolish to expect any number of heraldists from outside of the greater Edmonton area to make a regular trek to attend these meetings. Therefore, we have local meetings much more often. These meetings are open to anyone who is interested in heraldry, regardless of how much they know about the subject or if they are members of the Society (yet).
In Edmonton, meetings are held every month or two. People who are interested in attending should contact Darren George at 780-433-2140 or email: tressure
email.com.
In Red Deer, meetings are held generally every second Monday at 3:00 pm on the campus of Red Deer College. These are on hold for the summer. Non-students are welcome to attend; email rdcheraldry
canada.com to confirm.
In Calgary and in Saskatoon, meetings have yet to be organized. Contact Tom Hargreaves at 403-282-8091 for Calgary; Kathleen McCorkell (email: kmcorkell
shaw.ca or phone 306-374-8368) is in charge of Saskatoon.
People who are willing to host and organise local meetings in other areas (eg., Grande Prairie, Regina, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, Brandon, etc.) are eagerly sought.
