I found your site searching for McEacherns. I don't think there is any connection, though. Unless your Colin McEachern and his brother Hugh were also brothers of my gg grandfather Neil McEachern who, I think, came from Inverness, Scotland. Supposedly there were three brothers who came over, two ending up "in the North" and Neil who ended up in Couth Carolina. It is too bad that Chrissy (Caithness, Scotland, 3/16/98) didn't leave an email address since her gg grandmother was also a McEachern.
Mad Alchemist's Response: From what I can tell, there were McEacherns scattered all over western Scotland when my ancestors came over, so I can't be sure where they were from. But Colin and Hugh, it seems, had a brother named Neil (or maybe a son?)- you wouldn't expect them to have two brothers with the same name

George, I am in the US Navy and I am also a Canadian. I will be retiring the Navy in July and I want to display both flags US and Canadian. I know how to fold the US flag, but I don't know how to fold the Canadian flag. I would be very appreciated if you could give me some assistance. Thanks,Patrick
Mad Alchemist's Response: I believe you simply fold it in half along the stem of the leaf, then fold it diagonally into a triangle. Then fold it into smaller triangles. This only works with REAL Canadian flags, though- if you get a cheap foreign imitation, it is likely to be 3 x 5, instead of 2 x 1, and then it won't fold right.

Sorry to hack my way into your guestbook, but you know me, I could't resist the temptation! Well, I am truly a highlander, and the Guatemalan highlands are way higher than those of Scotland! I even have some Celt in me, my grandpa was from Asturias, and that is the Celtic part of Spain. Unfortunately, something went wrong in my family, we all seem to sing like Pitufina. Maybe it is just geographic genetics. Of course, I am oozing Latin Machismo, and it is not a pretty sight, so whatever Celt there is in me it is too little to make me a decent person! Well, I still say that psychedelic acid should be allowed as a colour for heraldry. Those of you reading this, write something in the guestbook. How else is a web master supposed to know if he is doing a good job or not? See you later Darren, don't let those stinky chemicals or their elementals get you ... I found your site by the message you had left in my
guestbook. My family settled in the western part of Nova Scotia. There is great debate
whether we are MacEacherns or McEacherns, I have even seen some conflicting tombstones
. Great Site
Mad Alchemist's Response: That's not really a valid debate- most of my ancestors in, say, the 18th century probably didn't know or care if it was Mc or Mac, and quite possibly spelled their name "X". Prior to the 18th cent., even literate people didn't care how their name was spelled, so long as what was written matched the pronounciation. (Case in point: The U of A library has cadastral atlases of PEI from 1880 and 1927. You can see how, in two generations, Panting has become Panton, Dougherty has become Docharty, &c. &c.)

I agree with your sentiments on being Canadian and when I started my homepage I made that clear and put in the appropriate buttons. I believe in non-hyphenated Canadianism with no exceptions, with people free to practice their religious and cultural beliefs but at the end of the day, when the fat lady sings she sinks O Canada.
Mad Alchemist's Response: Actually, I do not agree at all with your sentiments. According to your page, you see the threat to Canada as being from the immigrants who refuse to assimilate and the left-wing politicians who spend too much. I see the threat to Canada as being from American cultural and political dominance, and right-wing politicians who insist that we start doing everything the American way. I do not have a problem with hyphenated Canadians (such as Indo-Canadians, Irish-Canadians, or French-Canadians), since the operative word in these expressions is still Canadian. A bearded man is just as much a man as a "non-adjectified man who wears a beard"; a Scots-Canadian is just as Canadian as an "unhyphenated Canadian of Scottish descent", and considerably more honest. Sir Wilfred Laurier said that he considered Canada to be like a cathedral, where the marble remains marble, the oak remains oak, and the granite remains granite, yet all remain an essential part of a magnificent structure. People who wish every piece to be assimilated into common, homogeneous concrete would destroy the inherent beauty of Canada.
Of course, American immigrants to Canada should be forced to assimilate as soon as they cross the border.

Mad Alchemist's Response: I'm not sure about where the name originally comes from, other than that it's derived from the Greek word for "farmer". I strongly suspect that there is a large number of unrelated families with the same name, originally hailing from Greece, Ireland, Germany, England, and other places.

Hi - I came to your site via GOTC McDonald site. I was interested to see what you were going to say re crests/arms. You talk a lot of sense. I do wish the majority of our cousins over the water would realise the rules behind Scottish coats of arms/crests. I am a Stewart of Appin, born/raised in Edinburgh, now living in England. I just wish those people would actually be proud of being US and Canadians - they don't need us - and we certainly don't need them!!
Thanks- I'm glad someone thinks I make sense when I talk about heraldry! It's amazing how offended some people can get at some of my comments (especially, it seems, when I put a lot of effort into making my comments non-offensive).

Comments:
Well, I am not sure how to start this, I happened upon your site last nite and was quite frankly a little taken back. First of all you don't have your facts straight. I have been a resident of Bon Accord for over 10 years and I am the Public Relations director for the Chamber of Commerce. First of all Bon Accord does NOT mean "good wishes". Let me insight you a bit. Residents feel that "Bon Accord" means "Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again" and this when translated from Scottish and the motto of Aberdeen. There are others, however that feel it comes from French and that means "goodwill" or "friendship" and "Bonaccord" is defined as being from French "bon" or "good" and "accord" meaning "agreement". Universal dictionary of the english language offers insights into meaning of the word was from the time the school district was named. The dicitonary goes on to say it was used by way of toast as expressive amity and kindness. Term is associated with Aberdeen which is sometimes called the city of Bonaccord. It seems the motto of the city was later authorized by Robert the Bruce to use the word as the city's motto. So to give the toast"Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again" is used at a civic function. In ending may I suggest next time you wish to use someones logo you have the permission of the town, and that you have the facts correct. What plaque did you scan our logo from?? and using the name of the town on the scroll is NOT in bad taste, whats in bad taste is how you've stated things. And by the way...black is not a color and for anyone wanting the correct info please visit our town site at http://bonaccord.virtualave.net or feel free to call the town office for the correct info, and also available is our 100th Anniversary Bon Accord Herald newspaper with all the info you need on the naming of Bon Accord. Just so you know I intend on pursuing with town, the way you have used our town on your site, especially when you are not a resident of this community.
Mad Alchemist's Response: I am sorry if you feel that my very minor criticisms of the arms used by Bon Accord are uncalled-for. I have removed the image from my website to prevent further offense, but I stand by my opinions. They may not be gently phrased, but they are honest, and much more gentle than most of the criticisms on my website. In heraldry, black is indeed a colour, and I'm fairly sure that Bon Accord is French (if it means "goodwill" or "friendship" instead of "good wishes", I think that's a fairly trifling error) and not Gaelic. I am well aware that it is the motto of Aberdeen- I clearly stated so on my website. If you feel that I am not entitled to criticise the town of Bon Accord because I do not live there, despite the fact that my family has been there over ninety years, well, you are entitled to that opinion.

I do appreciate the fact that you at least responded to my comments. I also stated the towns web address in my comments, the one you have is the old one, thats why I posted the new one!!! Thanks for explaining the logo, yes you got that off a "license" plate that I happened to be involved in the printing in, I did not think it was a "plaque" It was done, yes for the 100th Anniversary of Bon Accord. Glad you verified that as I know the town does not easily let people have access to their logo, and I know they were not aware of you using it on this site. I am in the printing business and in many cases consent must b
Mad Alchemist's Response: Just because I don't agree with your interpretation of "Bon Accord" doesn't mean I can't acknowledge your opinion. The rules of heraldry suggest that I can display a coat of arms, so long as I make no claim that it is mine, and that the owner does not object.

Hi there !
Very nice site yuove got here. I am a heraldic artist from Denmark and I followed a link from the International Civic Arms-page to get here.
I am very interested in heraldry, and especially designing them and make old arms look like like hey had been designed today. If you just follow the rules of heraldry and have a bit of artistic integrity, nothing can go wrong.
But I think there is a big problem with these people on the Net who offer to find your family arms and make a nice drawing to the customer of it. A lot of people buys it, and most of the time they ar enot entitled to it. And not to memtion, the "artwork" is mostly very badly done.
But I dont know what there can be done.
I would like comments on this one ?..

Mad Alchemist's Response: What can be done about "bucket-shop heralds" convincing people that they have a "family crest" and cheating them out of their money for a picture which has little or no meaning? Not much- one can only put up one's own website which explains that these bucket-shops are selling tripe, and hope people will go to a library to find out who's correct.

Looking through message boards for McEachern and came across link. I am looking for a Mary McEachern (1839 - 1903) who married a MacLeod. Their daughter Margaret (1855-1946) married Alexander MacDonald (my great-grandparents). Any info?

Just touching base after a long spell. I see that you haven'nt lost your
humor or imaginative savvy while in Germany. More power to you. Unlike you, I am too lazy to work on the homepage you started
for me 2 years ago.
Mad Alchemist's Response: Long time no see! Good to hear from you again!

My maiden name was Panting, but as far as I know my ancestors are from England. Do you have any connection with this country?
If so I would be pleased to hear from you.
Mad Alchemist's Response: I am told that my ancestor came from England (Oxfordshire?), but that information hasn't been proved yet.

Thanks to all who signed (especially those who praised my humble efforts, except maybe Leo)! I suppose you now want to get back to my main page or to where you can sign the book yourself!
